Overview

This design competition has been conceived to provide a template for other rural communities that face the same challenges as Kilcreggan. The responses should however be site specific to Kilcreggan, the issues highlighted in this brief and the community consultation exercise.

Primarily as well as noting the issues raised in the community consultation exercise, entrants should consider the following site issues;

• How the community can retain & attract families and young people to the area
• How the community can retain & attract businesses
• How the community can retain & attract tourism
• How the fabric of the settlement can be improved
• How the settlement can capitalise on its location

Site

As per the attached site plan (download here DWG file, PDF file), although this should be considered as the main site for consideration of any proposal, proposals that are wholly or in part out-with this boundary will still be considered, as long as they meet the aims of the brief. Photographs of the site can be downloaded from the 'About' section.

The community had previously looked at creating a marina, however due to the location at the head of the firth they were advised that it would not be possible.

Community Development

The Community Development Trust is currently looking at a number of opportunities for funding, some of these are ambitious plans for revenue generation and therefore the scope and scale of the proposals could range from a very minor intervention to something much larger in scale. The Community Development Trust may chose to work with one or a number of the winning entrants to develop the proposals, when funding becomes available.

The Community Development Trust recognise the importance and relevance of the feedback they have received from the community consultation exercise and positive engagement with the local community will take place throughout the course of this competition. This is why the community workshop day at Cove Burgh Hall on Saturday 25th June 2011, is a critical component of the competition process. All of the entrants are invited to attend. Travel directions will be posted on the website.
